Working After Retirement Notice to KCPSRS Retirees

Effective September 15, 2020 through June 30, 2021, KCPSRS retirees may work as a substitute teacher or in part-time positions for a public school within the Kansas City school district boundaries without the normal limitations on hours worked (600 hours) or salary (not more than 50% of past salary). However, KCPSRS retirees may not work in a full-time position for a KCPSRS-covered employer without suspending their KCPSRS pension benefit.

With the many challenges facing schools during this pandemic, the Board of Trustees of Kansas City Public School Retirement System (KCPSRS) approved a temporary waiver of the “working after retirement limitations” on KCPSRS retirees for working as a substitute teacher or part-time at a KCPSRS-covered school for the remainder of this 2020-21 school year (ending June 30, 2021).

School leaders anticipate challenges finding qualified experienced teachers and staff to fill necessary short time gaps during this pandemic. The KCPSRS Board is committed to supporting our Kansas City school leaders to focus on the health, safety, and education of their students during this unprecedented time.

The 600 hour and 50% of past salary limitations on KCPSRS retirees who work for a school in the Kansas City school district will not be applicable through June 30, 2021.
